If you like to do all your own car repair, then you know that you have to have the right parts in order to keep your car running right. If you are going to get parts, there are different kinds of parts that you can get.
OEM
OEM stands for original equipment manufacturer. These parts are made by the exact same company that made the original parts for your car. The parts you put into your car will be exactly like the parts you just took out and would be the same one that would've been in your car when it rolled off the assembly line. The benefit of buying these parts is that they are usually pretty easy to find, at least for relatively contemporary cars. If your car is an older model or a classic car, it may be a little harder for you to find, since the parts may not be made any longer. You may have to go through a specialty company to get them in that case. Otherwise, you can find OEM parts at any auto parts store or service center.
Aftermarket
Another choice is to go with aftermarket parts. With aftermarket parts, you get all kinds of new choices. You can get parts that are just like OEM parts, but that are made by a different company. They would be the same base parts and would act just like the parts you already have. Or, you can get something like a high-performance muffler to replace the muffler that came with your car or a new stereo system to replace what you already have. These are really easy to get and you should be able to find them anywhere auto parts are sold.
Refurbished Parts
Another option is to go with refurbished parts. These would be something that you could find at a place like a salvage yard. They will pull the parts out of cars that they get into the yard, refurbish them so that they are in good shape, and then offer them for sale. The nice thing about this is that you can have a chance to find obscure and or unusual parts that you might have a harder time finding elsewhere.
