Choosing A New Snowplow For Your Snow Removal Needs

When you live in a part of the country that has a significant amount of snowfall in the winter, you need a way to move the snow off the driveway and parking area around your home or property. Installing a unimount snowplow on your truck is a popular option, and getting the right plow for your needs is essential.

Plow Size

When you start looking at unimount snowplows for your truck, it is essential that you get one that is the right size for your needs. The snowplow needs to be slightly wider than the truck, and the weight needs to be light enough that the truck's suspension can support it.

Because there are so many different plows on the market, there is no such thing as one size fits all here. Instead, you will need to talk with the dealer about the snowplow that is right for your truck and have them show you the sizes and styles that will fit and not damage the suspension or drivetrain of the vehicle.

Plow Mounting

Unimount snowplows have become more common on modern trucks because the system is easy to install, and when the plow is off the truck, the push frame, lights, and hydraulics are removed as well. In the past, the frame stayed in place when you removed the plow, but it made it hard to work under the hood, and the frame always stuck out several feet in front of the vehicle.

With these new systems, the hydraulics, lights, and push frame are all one unit and can be removed from the truck by pulling two pins and a couple of electrical connections. The unimount snowplow can be stored out of the way until you need it, and you can use the truck normally until you need to move some snow.

The system allows you to connect the plow in about five minutes and is safer because there is no lifting. Simply drive up to the plow, line up the brackets, make the connection, and you are ready to go.

Snowplow Accessories

Unimount snowplow dealers often offer some accessories that you may want to use with the plow on your truck. For example, a snow foil is a curved piece of metal or plastic that goes along the top edge of the plow to help force the snow to roll over and stay in front of the plow. They can be helpful to keep snow from rolling off the top to the plow and hitting the hood and windshield of the truck.

Side plates, covers for the plow, and upgraded lights are just some of the accessories you may want to consider for your unimount snowplow, so talk to your dealer to see what the options are.
